Kolmogorov’s two-equation model of turbulence

A. N. Kolmogorov, in 1941, proposed a method of predicting the behaviour of turbulent flows which is remarkably similar to the ‘turbulence-modelling’ techniques which have subsequently become commonplace. The present article describes Kolmogorov’s method, and discusses its similarities to and differences from the subsequently developed techniques. A translation of the 1941 paper is provided as an appendix.
