A 2-2 pull-downed film mode detection and treatment method with scrolling subtitles

In this paper we propose a 2-2 pull-downed film mode detection and treatment method considering scrolling subtitles to improve the feathering problem of scrolling subtitles. The method includes: First, the screen is separated into two areas: subtitle area and other area. Second, film mode is detected in other area. Third, in the subtitle area, scrolling subtitles are searched. If it is 2-2 pull-downed film mode and there are scrolling subtitles on this film, then traditional de-interlace method is used in subtitle area, and traditional film mode treatment is used in other area; If it is 2-2 pull-downed film mode and there are no scrolling subtitles on this film, then traditional film mode treatment is used in the whole area. If it is not 2-2 pull-downed film mode, then traditional de-interlace method is used in the whole area. Hardware simulations and FPGA prototyping demonstrate that the method is effective, the progressive frames can be reconstructed perfectly.
