Scintillation in LiBaF/sub 3/(Ce) crystals

Core-valence, self-trapped exciton and Ce/sup 3+/ luminescences in pure and doped LiBaF/sub 3/ crystals were determined on the basis of analysis of the time resolved emission and excitation spectra. It is shown that excitation of Ce-luminescence is caused both by carriers capture at or near activator ions and by energy transfer mechanisms. Parameters of the Ce/sup 3+/ emission and n-/spl gamma/ discrimination ability allow to use the LiBaF/sub 3/(Ce) crystals as scintillators.
