Analysis on the Waiting Time of Empty Taxis for the Taxi Telematics System

This paper creates both spatial and temporal statistics of taxi's waiting spots from the movement history data accumulated and now made available in the Jeju taxi telematics system. To the end of recommending drivers the waiting spot they can more possibly take a now customer on the specific time instant and place, the analysis procedure first defines a state diagram that traces the sequence of changes in taxi's status and speed, creating 4,335 pick-up records out of 1.3 M location reports from the 2.3 test month. Second, after plotting all pick-up points represented as (x,y) coordinate, visual inspection builds clusters and selects 10 hot spots including such areas as city hall and airport. Finally, the frequency, success ratio, and the waiting time of each spot is analyzed mainly on the hour-base. This work contributes to digitize and verify the long-time experience and empirical preference of many drivers.
