Abstract : With advancements in science and technology occurring at such a swift pace, the rapid transfer of scientific and technical information (STI) has taken on a new level of importance. In the areas of microelectronics, manufacturing technology, and computer technology, there is an increasing interest in Japanese STI. Unfortunately, the transfer of STI between foreign countries has its own set of special problems. The papers included in this document discuss tools which can be employed to diminish the barriers to access to Japanese STI. In particular, they discuss the availability of online and print tools for the identification of Japanese STI, sources for the acquisition of Japanese STI, and the availability of Japanese translations and translating services (commercial and public).
