On a mathematical model for fiber tapering

A simple model for tapering optical glass fibers is described and analysed to show that unless the initial conditions have certain spatial singularities, the cross-sectional area cannot be made to vanish in finite time. The model is applied to an industrial process in which the fiber has piecewise uniform temperature.
