1 Gbit/s fibre channel CMOS transimpedance amplifier

A high-speed, low-noise transimpedance amplifier has been implemented in 0.8 /spl mu/m digital CMOS technology. Featuring a broadband input source-follower stage, the amplifier has an effective transimpedance gain of 66.5 dB/spl Omega/ (2110 /spl Omega/), consuming 155 mW. The measured input noise current density of the amplifier is 4.6 pA//spl radic/Hz. With equivalent input sensitivity of -24 dBm at 1 Gbit/s for 10/sup -12/ bit error rate (BER). To the authors knowledge, this is the first gigabit transimpedance amplifier ever demonstrated in standard CMOS technology.
