A Cognitive View of Spatial Uncertainty

It seems appropriate that a book concerned with understanding spatial uncertainty in the context of ecology should contain a chapter that discusses cognitive issues. Ecology as a discipline represents the development of a particular way of thinking (i.e., holistic thinking) about the world; a way of thinking that is foreign to the mechanistic world view that dominated much of the twentieth century. Furthermore, although a great deal has been said about uncertainty, particularly about spatial uncertainty, little effort has been made seriously to address the cognitive roots of spatial uncertainty despite widespread lip service concerning their importance.
