Conservative Protestantism on the American Scene

La survivance du protestantisme conservateur dans la société moderne n'avait pas été prévue par de nombreux spécialistes des sciences sociales au cours des cent dernières années. Toutefois, aux États Unis, le «Mouvement Évangélique» ne se contente pas de survivre. Il se caractérise au contraire par une vigueur intense. C'est ce dont témoignent la croissance des affiliations au sein des dénominations conservatrices, l'expansion du réseau de base des moyens de communication de masse des «évangéliques» et la rée mergence d'une ostensible et puissante coalition politique entre eux. Dans ces conditions, la survivance du protestantisme conser vateur n'est toutefois pas séparable de son côté équivoque. La rationalité moderne, le pluralisme culturel et structurel (la dicho tomisation de l'existence entre spheres privée et publique) impo sent des contraintes à ce système de croyance et le force dans une certaine mesure à l'adaptation. Cette adaptation rend la foi évan gélique plus ou moins soutenable pour le croyant moderne.
