IEEE 802.11 AD HOC Networks: Protocols, Performance, and Open Issues

The aim of this chapter is triple: an in-depth investigation of the ad hoc features of the IEEE 802.11 standard; an analysis of the performance of 802.11-based ad hoc networks; and an investigation of the major problems arising when using the 802.11 technology for ad hoc networks, and possible directions for enhancing this technology for a better support of the ad hoc networking paradigm. We briefly describe the architecture and protocols of IEEE 802.11 WLANs and later introduce the terminology and present the concepts that are relevant throughout the chapter.
