USING COLLIERY SPOIL FOR ROAD BUILDING

Burnt colliery spoil is a potentially valuable engineering material present in significant quantities in the UK. It can be used successfully as general fill or as a capping layer, and may also be used in higher quality applications such as sub-base. Cement stabilisation reduces frost susceptibility but an increase in control and testing may be required which may incease costs. Unburnt colliery spoil is a poorer engineering material and its use is usually restricted to general fill although it may be stabilised with cement for use in certain restricted circumstances.
