Estimates of possible detection limits for combustion intermediates and products with line-center absorption and derivative spectroscopy using tunable lasers

We have made some theoretical estimates for the poossible limits of detectability in line-center absorption and derivative spectroscopy using tunable lasers on transparent gas systems, with Lorentzian or Dopplers line {fx177-02}. Detection limits achievable with laser-absorption techniques are three to four orders of {fx177-03} smaller than those obtainable with correlation spectroscopy. Changes in transmitted laser signal of 10 4 –10 6 should be measurable with a signal-to-noise ratio of ten at an amplification bandwidths of 10 4 Hz. We present summary tables of detection limits for a number of chemical species and then show the feasibility of applying line-center and derivative laser spectroscopy to the simultaneous measurement of reactant, reaction intermediates, and product species in selected
