Getting in the way of (each other's) progress - managing pedestrian-cyclist conflict on paths

The purpose of this paper is to assess the results of a study conducted by the Austroads and managed by the Australian Bicycle Council and to provide a guide to appropriate initiatives to recognize and minimize conflict along shared paths. The conjunction of pedestrians and cyclists in addition to the use of wheeled recreational devices and mobility aids causes real concerns fro walker safety on paths in shared facilities. The issue of conflict on paths may be becoming more serious as the number of people walking or cycling increases after a prolonged period of decline in many places, combined with a high level of reliance on shared facilities. Some solutions to this problem are based upon design or engineering center approaches, including regulation and enforcement others are based on the desirability of avoiding uncertainty for users.
