Analysis and performance of a three-phase AC generator with inset permanent-magnet rotor

This paper presents the analysis and performance of a three-phase AC generator with an inset permanent magnet rotor. It is shown that the generator exhibits inverse saliency, with a consequent improvement in voltage regulation. The finite element method is used for computing the magnetic field distribution, from which the synchronous reactances, and hence the generator performance, may be determined. The theoretical analysis is verified by experiments performed on a 2.5 kVA prototype generator.
