Remote monitoring of medical devices in Australia

ore patients, and therefore medical professionals at all levels, are encountering Mdevices that are being remotely monitored. While all currently implanted pacemakers and defibrillators are now remote-monitoring capable, there has also been a substantial increase in the use of implantable loop monitors — from 987 in the 2013e14 financial year to 2269 in 2015e16 (Medicare Benefits Schedule item 38285; http://medicarestatistics. humanservices.gov.au/statistics/mbs_item.jsp). This increase has forced the health care system to engage with remote monitoring.
