Replacement of the Aortic Root in Patients with Marfan Syndrome

This study evaluated a total of 675 patients with Marfan syndrome who underwent replacement of their aortic root. Six hundred and five patients were involved in a multiinstitutional study that included Johns Hopkins, Alabama, Stanford, St. Joseph's Hospital in Baltimore, the surgery centers at those programs, and the Department of Human Genetics at Allegheny in Pittsburgh. The 30-day mortality rate was 1.5% among 455 patients who underwent elective repair and slightly higher at 2.6% in 117 patients who underwent urgent repair (within 7 days af-
