COLLAPSE LOADS IN PURE TORSION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS CONTAINING AN OPENING. ACMSM 9; THE NINTH AUSTRALASIAN CONFERENCE ON THE MECHANICS OF STRUCTURES AND MATERIALS, 29-31 AUGUST 1984, UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY

A simple analytical model is presented to calculate the torsional capacity of a reinforced concrete beam that contains a large rectangular opening. The method is based on the collapse load analysis. The domain of feasible solution for the assumed collapse mechanism has been defined. Beams that fall outside this domain can be considered to have small openings. In such a case, failure will occur by the skew-bending mechanism (beam mechanism in torsion). (TRRL)
