ACCELERATING STANDARDS ADOPTION IN THE FURNITURE INDUSTRY THROUGH GLOBAL SHARING OF TECHNOLOGICAL KNOW-HOW

This paper describes the work in progress to promote and assist rapid adoption of STEP (Standard for Exchange of Product Model Data – ISO 10303) in the furniture industry worldwide, with special focus on the progress already made in Europe. This work, identified by the acronym ConTest, has its basis in technologies developed by different organizations in Europe and the US. ConTest aims to synthesize the results of a number of projects to collaboratively pursue its goal of promoting STEP (ISO 10303-1 1994) in the furniture industry and accelerating its adoption and use by furniture manufacturers, their suppliers, and resellers worldwide. This paper presents the context in which ConTest was conceived, the strategy adopted by its participants, and the benefits that will be realized as the work progresses. The results of the initial pilot tasks are also presented and discussed.
