A before-and-after study of traffic signal setting on an arterial road

The research detailed in this paper adopted the data from a probe vehicle, tube counters and Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) to conduct travel time and traffic volume surveys. Based on these data sets, before and after data was collected on a real world road segment that had its traffic signal setting changed. An analysis of the data showed what the overall traffic system performance was for each case. A micro-simulation model was also developed, to evaluate the same section of road and traffic signal settings. The research can contribute to the process of traffic signal optimization of arterial roads and indicate the benefits or disadvantages of changing signal settings from Flexilink Mode to Masterlink Mode in SCATS.
