Intrathecal Phenol for Cancer Pain

From 1960 to 1970, we have given a total of 313 intrathecal injections of phenol in glycerine to 151 cancer patients for intractable pain. In 77 %, pain relief was excellent to satisfactory, while no pain relief was obtained in 23 %. Complications, such as bladder and rectum paralysis, muscle pareses and headaches, were all transitory. We have found the method so simple and safe that it can be carried out in the out‐patient department or, if necessary, in the patient's home.
