Data Structures and Pattern Recognition

The term “data structures”(1) is well-established in computer science, conveying the idea of how tables and lists are stored, but it is a relatively new concept in pattern recognition. In pattern recognition, the concept of data structures is a continuation of the initial notion of “feature” from statistical pattern recognition(2)—that is, a simple clue helpful in decision-making—to include: 1. Nonstatistical or descriptive pattern recognition methodologies(3): Linguistic, syntactic, and structural methods. 2 Sequential calculations (a) Feature extraction depending on decision to be made. (b) Multilevel or hierarchical classification processes: “understanding”(4,5).
