Shear deformation coefficient for generally orthotropic beam

Abstract This paper presents a derivation of the shear deformation coefficient for a generally orthotropic beam with a rectangular cross section. The assumption of generalised plane stress simplified the formulation of an expression for the stress distribution in the beam under the joint action of bending and twisting moments. Numerical examples illustrate the dependence of the shear deformation coefficient on the orientation of reinforcing fibres.
