This paperconsiders various factors affecting sys- temorganization forspeech understanding research. Thestruc- tureoftheHearsay systembasedonasetofcooperating, inde- pendent processes usingthehypothesize-and-test paradigm is presented. Design considerations fortheeffective useofmultip- rocessor andnetwork achitectures inspeech understanding sys- temsarepresented: control ofprocesses, interprocess communi- cation anddatasharing, resource allocation, anddebugging are discussed.'
