Development of sensor system to support coastal fishery

In a coastal fishery, fishing nets are located far away from the land, so it would take several hours to arrive there, which increases the cost. Moreover, fishermen cannot know the volume or type of fishes caught within the fixed net in advance. Therefore, we propose a new low cost sensor network system which can observe the environment inside and around the net. We have developed a fishing net monitoring system using web cameras and various low-cost sensors. The experiment has proven that the system can measure tidal streams under the sea level which can be used to estimate fishes around the net.
