Scatternet Structure and Inter-Piconet Communication in the Bluetooth System

In pico-cellular wireless systems such as Bluetooth, a large number of inter-communicating mobile devices can be present in a small area. Piconets are formed in an adhoc manner and may not be connected to the wired network. In this paper, we propose and study policies for design of piconets and inter-piconet communication (in the absence of connectivity to the wired network). We compare the throughput and the average system delays in a single piconet structure with a Scatternet structure (multiple overlapping piconets). We also study two models of inter-piconet communication in a Scatternet.
