The Art of Modelling in Science and Engineering

Chapters on bodies, configurations, motions, kinematics and basic laws of mechanics together with constituitive equations, reduced constituitive equations and internal constraints set the tone for this text. These basics are followed by detailed studies of flows involving simple fluids, some incompressible fluids in general and some particular nonlinear fluids. Navier-Stokes fluids together with incompressible/ compressible Euler fluids lead to a final chapter on singular surfaces and waves. A very brief appendix 'Elementary results from real analysis' is followed by minimal solution guides to a number of exercises and an adequate index.
