Training with Synthetic Agents: An Instructional Conops

SCOTT is a training simulator in which synthetic agents serve as teammates and instructor to a human student who practices teamwork skills in the domain of airborne air control. SCOTT is a member of a new generation of intelligent tutoring systems called Intelligent Team Training Systems (ITTS). As such, it poses new challenges in automated training. In this paper, we review SCOTT progress and plans regarding five of these challenges: identifying operational needs, building on sound theory, measuring teamwork, training within practice scenarios, and framing scenarios with automated briefings and debriefings.
