A traffic cellular automaton model with optimised speed

Cellular automata is popular for their simplicity and the tremendous potential they hold in simulating complex systems. This paper aims to provide different traffic cellular automata approaches used by researchers over the past decades. This paper also presents a traffic model based on one-dimensional cellular automaton rule 184 (CA-184). The methodology describes the basic CA-184 rule and introduces different type of parameters being used in traffic modelling. A CA-184 rule is applied to a single lane with one intersection. It also further extends the rule by applying adaptive safe distance between vehicles to capture the nature of real traffic flow. Despite the simplicity of cellular automata, the traffic model proves that it is reliable and effective to model a complex traffic stream.
