Polymer-polymer friction: Relation to adhesion

Abstract The friction of pure polyethylene and acrylic acid groups grafted films is examined at a low rotation speed with a pin-on-disc type of tribometer for sliding on polymethylmethacrylate or polyamide. The friction coefficient μ at equilibrium appears proportional to the corresponding adhesion energy of the same films on a rigid substrate, as determined by a peel test, rather than to the reversible adhesion energy calculated from the surface components. This shows how much interfacial and mechanical properties are simultaneously intervening in polymer-polymer tribology.
