CERCoin: Carbon tracking enabling Blockchain system for Electric Vehicles

The world is at a critical juncture in CO2 emissions. A core creator of these emissions are the activities associated with the use of combustible engine vehicles. Moving from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles (EV s) will help in the reduction of these greenhouse emissions. This research proposes a novel Blockchain-based approach to complement existing incentives to further the adoption of EV s. This will be done through the integration of smart car technology with Blockchain to allow EV owners mine a tradeable token called CERCoin through their 'green’ mileage. This approach addresses a gap in the current Blockchain research to leverage private citizens and transport fleets to reduce carbon intensive activities. The evaluation of the proposed approach that is based also on interviews demonstrates the potential and the benefits of the solution.
