Genetic algorithm simulation approach to determine membership functions of fuzzy traffic controller

A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine membership functions in situations where fuzzy traffic control rules are given by human operators. To find membership functions showing good performance, the authors use a simulation approach while conventional methods are used to compute mathematical functions. In the simulation approach, the fitness value of a chromosome is determined by the use of a performance measure that is obtained by a traffic simulator.
