Codon recognition: the allosteric ribosome hypothesis.

It is possible that simple base pairing between codon and anticodon triplets is incapable of providing the accuracy required for the translation process. An auxiliary mechanism for increasing this accuracy is herein proposed, whereby the ribosome recognizes the codon, in response to which it assumes a particular configuration. The ribosomal configuration in turn controls which of the tRNA species are permitted access to any given codon. Evidence supporting the model and some of its predictions are discussed.
