Using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG), this study explores the question of how trainee interpreters handle source text (ST) Themes in their interpreting notes and how they interpret them into the target language. SFG has been applied to translation studies and translator education as a tool to explain different translation choices and evaluate translation quality. However, its usefulness for interpreting studies and/or interpreter education has been hardly explored yet. Against this backdrop, this study analysed Themes of a short English speech text used as ST, examined how interpreting trainees handled the ST Themes when they took notes (NT) for interpreting and how they interpreted them into the Korean target text (TT). It discusses four selected salient patterns of notetaking and interpreting relations observed from the data analysis such as reflection, omission, restoration and ellipsis. The paper concludes with some suggestions for further interpreting research based on SFG.
