One-dimensional fracture

Abstract A random fracture model of one-dimensional breakage has been tested using spaghetti and chalk sticks as the experimental material, and also by sampling from random number tables. One-dimensional breakage data were combined to simulate breakage in two and three dimensions. The experimental size distributions deviate from the random model, suggesting that real breakage is not merely random, and that a proper model must include an evaluation of the mechanism of force application and its effect on the distribution of fracture sites.
