This paper presents the development and advancement of digital optical scanning technology brought by the SSET. Chronological development history and evolution of the optical scanner technology is outlined. The inner works of the scanner and example outputs are provided. Advantages of the digital technology over the conventional analog CCTV are discussed. Also, this paper will provide details of the evaluation program utilized for the third-generation SSET system and the first commercial project for the Los Angeles County Public Works Department. This project involves the internal inspection of reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) damaged as a result of earthquake activity.
