Social Computing and Social Media: 7th International Conference, SCSM 2015, Held as Part of HCI International 2015, Los Angeles, CA, USA, August 2–7, 2015, Proceedings

Search engine technology has greatly enhanced our ability to filter through the chaos of finding relevant information online. Despite the current capabilities, however, there is the promise of further improvement through the use of personalization and alternative interfaces. In this paper we examine one such alternative named PAsSIVE (Personalized Assisted Search in a Virtual Environment). PAsSIVE immerses the user in the virtual world of Second Life in which results are rendered. As part of this research, we investigate the design and development of a 3D search interface, and reflect on insights gained. This paper also discusses future work related to personalization and proactive search.
