Solar Radiation Measurements

In solar engineering applications (solar-thermal or photovoltaic), a spectral wavelength range about 0.28–4 μm is usually considered. Ground- and satellite-based broadband measurements in this range are currently performed and are described further in this chapter. Solar radiation fundamentals and the main radiometric quantities are summarized in the first section. Section two is dedicated to radiometry instrumentation for surface measurements and the main monitoring networks and databases are reviewed. Section three explains the derivation of the solar energy irradiance/irradiation from satellite observations. A brief review of the methods and a survey of available databases are presented. Some specifications of the required data for forecasting the output of PV systems are given in section four.
