Modeling and Simulation of Simulated Moving Bed Separation Processes

In this chapter the strategies of modeling simulated moving bed (SMB) processes are discussed. Models for transient SMB and equivalent true moving bed (TMB) processes are derived. Steady-state TMB models are presented and cyclic steady state of SMB processes is discussed. The base model includes axial dispersion flow and linear driving force approximation for intraparticle mass transfer in homogeneous particles. Extension to porous particles is discussed. Process performance parameters (purity, recovery, desorbent consumption, and productivity) are defined. The effects of model parameters on concentration profiles and process performance are analyzed through simulation. Numerical solution of model equations is presented with reference to available software, homemade simulators, and commercial packages.
