The invention discloses a method for controlling an intelligent wheelchair based on lip detecting and tracking, relating to a method for controlling an intelligent wheelchair based on lip detecting and tracking by combining image processing with intelligent wheelchair control. The method comprises the following steps of: establishing a lip profile detecting and tracking mathematic model by takingthe intelligent wheelchair as a platform and reading a face part image by using a camera; detecting and tracking a lip profile; performing feature extraction on a lip motion sequence by using an objective appearance model method with high robustness; and modeling and identifying an image sequence by using a hidden Markov model. In the invention, a method for controlling the motion of the intelligent wheelchair through a lip reading technology is realized. By adopting an intelligent wheelchair control interaction technology disclosed by the invention, the aged or a handicapped person with limited moving ability can realize basic control over the intelligent wheelchair in a natural language. According to the control method, a user of the intelligent wheelchair is not required to learn a machine language and can directly use a natural language, so that natural man-machine interaction is realized.
