Stress intensity factor equations for single and multiple cracked pressurized thick-walled cylinders

Abstract Mode 1 stress intensity factors, K I , are evaluated for internally pressurized cylinders containing long radial cracks along the internal bore. The stress intensity factors are calculated using the finite element method for cylinders with diameter ratios ranging from W = 1·25 to 2·25 containing single and multiple uniform radial cracks. Special effort is made to condense the K I data into a compact non-dimensional form and to obtain equations which describe the effect of diameter ratio and crack depth on the stress intensity factor.
