Spin Orbit Coupling in the Nuclear Shell Model

It is shown that the magnitude of the doublet splitting postulated in Mayer's nuclear shell model is consistent with that observed in 5He. The strength of the indicated spin orbital interaction between pairs of nucleons is worked out.
