Abstract In this paper, a computer-aided design system of extrusion dies is described. In the development of the CAD system, a hierarchical data structure called locating tree was used to describe extrusion dies and to store the information on how all the components in a die assembly are combined. Based on the data structure, the conceptual design and logical design of the CAD data base system were carried out.
