Wireless ATM LAN with and without infrastructure

A wireless ATM LAN framework architecture designed to support wireless ATM communications in environments with and without fixed ATM infrastructure is described. For the configuration with ATM infrastructure a distributed ATM switching backbone is proposed, which allows a smart ATM switching element to be embedded into the wireless access point. The same embedded ATM switch technique is used to realise forwarding and interworking nodes in an adhoc wireless ATM LAN which is proposed to combat the weakness of CSMA-based systems such as HIPERLAN and IEEE802.11.
