3D profile generation by dot-matrix method using miniaturized electrode feeding devices

This paper deals with a new prototyping method by electrical discharge machining (EDM). In this method, shapes are machined on a workpiece by scanning bundled wire electrodes whose length is controlled independently. A prototype of a machining unit by this method has six miniaturized electrode feeding devices. The wire electrodes of 0.3 mm in diameter are arranged with the pitches of 0.76 mm. By compensating the wear of the electrode during EDM, various shapes with the accuracy of micrometers order can be obtained without machining a tool electrode.
