Preparation and properties of uniform coated inorganic colloidal particles: III. Zirconium hydrous oxide on hematite☆

Abstract Spheroidal particles of zirconium hydrous oxide of a reasonably uniform size have been synthesized by aging at elevated temperatures aqueous solutions of zirconium sulfate in the presence of formamide. Uniform coatings of zirconium hydrous oxide have been deposited over spindle-type hematite particles by aging the preformed solids in the above solutions in the presence of a stabilizing agent (polyvinyl pyrrolidone or polyvinyl alcohol). The nature of the resulting systems and the thickness of the deposited layers could be manipulated by suitably adjusting the reactant concentrations, amount of added hematite, and temperature.
