A simple model for dendrite arm coarsening during solidification

Abstract A simple model of secondary dendrite arm coarsening is proposed based on the dissolution of small arms from their tips. Analytical solutions giving arm spacings as a function of time during solidification are provided for both isothermal and constant cooling-rate conditions. The predictions agree well with experiment over a wide range of conditions.
