Design of shaped lenses for non-symmetric cells in MBS

This paper presents the design steps and measured characteristics of shaped dielectric lenses developed for operation with base stations (BS) and mobile terminals (MT) of the coming millimeterwave cellular mobile broadband systems (MBS). In one case the BS antenna produces a wide sectored region of illumination with secant-squared characteristic in the elevation plane. In the other case a secant-characteristic is produced over an elongated cell like a street. A simple approximate procedure is introduced to design these antennas as axis-symmetric lenses fed by a rectangular waveguide positioned off-axis to obtain the required non-symmetric cell coverage.
