A method and an apparatus for monitoring a sleeping state are provided to determine the sleeping state by using a motion artifact detected from a biological signal of a sleeping user. An apparatus for monitoring a sleeping state includes a biological signal measuring module(210), a biological signal processing module(220), and a determining module(230). The biological signal measuring module measures biological signals from a sleeping user. The biological signal processing module determines whether a motion artifact is included in the biological signal. The determining module determines that the user is awake when the motion artifact is included in the biological signal.
