A map of the world of software-related standards, guidelines, and recommended practices

Abstract Some of 47 industry, U.S. government, foreign and international organizations produce over 1,000 software-related standards, guidelines, and codes of good practice. A snapshot of software-related standardization today emerges from linking subject areas to types of standards (existing and emerging and industry, U.S. government, foreign or international), and existing and emerging standards activities from subject to organization. This snapshot includes some of the significant standards and producers in selected subject areas. Despite substantial cooperation and coordination nationally and internationally, this morass of standards can appear confusing and intimidating to the novice. In addition, becoming familiar with these standards requires a substantial investment of time.
