Potential of ITS to Improve Safety and Mobility of VRUs

The most promising Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications for Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) in Europe are presented in this paper. The paper showed how both technological developments and research activities in the field of ITS have recently focused on motorized transport to improve safety and mobility and also to decrease traffic fatalities. The paper described how VRUs, such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclist and moped drivers, have not seen a decrease in fatalities in urban areas. The Vulnerable Road User Intelligent Transportation Systems (VRUITS) project that is presented in this paper: assessed the safety and mobility impacts of ITS applications for VRUs; assessed the impacts of current and upcoming ITS applications on the safety and mobility of VRUs; identified how the usability and efficiency of ITS applications can be improved; and recommended policy improvements for ITS safety and mobility.
